Preface on writing about books
I like to read. Much like my musical tastes, I go through ‘flavors of the day’ for what genre I’m in to. I just got off a fantasy and history binge and I’m now crawling into personal finance and business. Don’t ask me about the business thing because I can’t really give you a good answer.
With my recent decision to start and maintain an active blog, I’ll be writing about and discussing the different books I read during my cruise ship contract. I will try to avoid writing articles that look like a classic good/bad review, but I will be not be dishonest about my opinions. My opinions, however, will not be point of the posts.
Instead, these write ups will be about the thoughts and concepts provoked by reading and their respective applications into my own life. For example, my first book article was about Unlimited Memory by Memory Grandmaster Kevin Horsely. This wasn’t my favorite book I have ever read, but the point of my article was to take his learning techniques and figure out a way to apply them to music. I will make a point of trying to glean quality from every book I read and post about. No one wants to read why I didn’t like something and I don’t want to write it. There are better, more nuanced (or not so nuanced) sources available if that is what you are looking for.
Throughout this process, I will be reading books that are disparate from my original field of study. That is point. I will do my best to then connect them back to my own life experience in a meaningful and accessible way. If you have any suggestions or ideas on how to improve this aspect of my blog, please shoot me a note at firstname.lastname@example.org or leave a comment below. Thanks for reading!
